It's Not Too Late: Turn Your Pond Around This Fall
Even once August arrives, it is not too late to turn around your pond, lake, river or stream. If you work it through the fall, it will be ready for a healthier spring — and some nature-based solutions work best at this time of year.
A fall plan that works
- Find out what is feeding the problem. Excess phosphorus, nitrogen and bottom muck are the usual sources.
- Start the biology. Beneficial bacteria and a diatom promoter work on nutrients in the water and on the bottom.
- Bind the phosphorus. Phosphorus binders take it out of the water column so algae lose their fuel.
- Add oxygen. Aeration keeps the water mixed and supports the bacteria.
Deal with leaf litter before it settles
Autumn adds a new load of organic material to a pond: leaves, plant debris and dead algae that sink and decay on the bottom. That material becomes next year’s muck and next year’s nutrients. Our example plan for a 13-acre lake keeps beneficial bacteria working through September and October, with monthly PBL dosing to support late-season nitrification and one final Sludge Away application before leaf drop. Bio-Lair media stays deployed so denitrification continues. The full schedule is on our nitrogen and organic muck reduction page.
Keep the oxygen up
Good aeration matters most when decay is heaviest. Bottom-diffused systems can provide year-round oxygenation, including under ice, in deeper water; our aeration guide explains how to match the right system to your pond’s depth and power supply.
